: Department of Chemistry :

The Department of Chemistry at M. U. Mahavidyalaya (estd.1962) is one of the premier Department having Post-Graduation (starting on 1992) in Organic Chemistry with a Research Center in S. R. T. M. University Nanded, Maharashtra, India. The department is one of the best for its teaching, research activities and quality of visiting academics it hosts. The department enjoys strong institutional support as well as financial support from different funding agencies such as University Grant Commission (UGC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) etc. Our department also made collaboration with Department of Chemistry, Monash University, Melbourn, Australia. As a part of this our staff member Dr. Patil visited Australia as a visiting scientist for three months.

Research Profile:

The waste material and by-products formed in any reactions are still challenges to the chemist for their disposal and avoidance of formation. In context the fast and ecofriendly reactions with high yield of product have been carried out under different simple, clean and green alternative procedures, using ionic liquid catalysts. The ionic liquid catalysts are repeatedly recycled and reused with the same efficiency in several organic reactions. The advantage of these catalyst reactions is the reactions required minimum ionic solvent system without significant loss of its activity. It is proposed to investigate various organic reactions using ionic liquids, water and molecular cerium iodide as the reaction media/catalyst. Chalcones constitute an important class of organic compounds, which occupy a central place in biogenesis. The chemistry of chalcones and their derivatives has been recognized as a significant field of study. The presence of CH=CH-C=O functional group in chalcone confirms antibiotic activity. They are also show an inhibitory action against on several enzymes and fungi. It is proposed to synthesize some new chalcones and their derivatives. The synthesized compounds will be further scan for microbial activity.

Plans of the Department:

We are wishing to start M.Sc. Drug Chemistry, because we wish to trend students for (i) Designing a bioactive molecules, (ii) Their synthesis, and (iii) To study their enzymetic interactions, in one course.

Pharma company get such students who are expertise in the field, i.e., drug designing, synthesis and biological activity.

Long Term Goals:

  • To caters the need of Pharmaceutical, dyes, polymer and agrochemical Industries.

  • Development of new synthetic methodologies for functional materials.

  • Best resource for students and researchers.

  • Strong collaboration with Institutions, Universities and Industries of International repute.

  • Utilization of excellent facilities.

  • Best education and research programs in Organic synthesis and technology areas

  • To develop the department as centre of excellence in all aspects of education, research and development of basic technology in chemistry.

Short Term mission:

It is proposed to start the courses in the emerging areas as per UGC guidelines in the several disciplines like Environment Chemistry, Agro Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Nano Technology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
