: Department of Botany :

Need of science education at graduation for rural areas was fulfilled by starting science at degree levels first of all in our college in July 1963 under the able guidance of the first Principal Dr. N.Y. Dole.

Shri A. S. Jadhav, father of Modern Latur pattern was the first Head of the Botany department . Dr. A. S. Dhaware took over the charge of the department in 1971. Most of our students are in higher education, research and got good positions in government as well as private establishments. A few of students serving as scientists in premier research institutes of India and abroad.

The department is actively engaged in research activities and is a recognized as a research centre of Aerobiology, Mycology and Plant pathology. Since its establishment 13 students were awarded Ph.D. Degree.

The department has good collection of rare books on Angiosperms flora as “Flora of Bombay Presidency”, “Flora of Madras Presidency” etc.

Long, short and local excursions are arranged periodically for collection of Plants.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To improve the quality of laboratory and field work and plants studied through exploration and excursion.

  • To give knowledge to students about local flora and ecosystem

  • To provide the students of Botany introducing recent advances in life sciences and guide the students for NET, SET and other examinations.

  • To promote the students for selecting plant science as their career.

  • To make provision for improved research activities in plant sciences.

  • To make students aware about nature, natural resources and its conservation.

Features of the department:

  • The Department maintains a Botanical garden since inception, a treasure of plant wealth, conservatory of rare, endangered species, trees and shrubs which are witness of glorious era of the Botany Department, catering to the needs of young botanists of today, attended by skilled gardeners.

  • The Herbarium cum Museum in the Department is one of the oldest in the Latur district .

  • Our Research Interest is mainly focused on Algal Biotechnology in relation to Bioremediation and Plant pathology, Phytoplankton Dynamics, Ecological modeling and Microbial diversity of Udgir and surroundings with special reference to Genomic diversity and Molecular phylogeny of fungi.
